The First Domestic Portable Four-Component Greenhouse Gas Analyzer

Experiment Background

Long-term observations by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have shown a yearly increase in the greenhouse gas content in soil emissions. Many research findings suggest significant differences between field fluxes of N2O, CH4, and CO2 and laboratory culture data, highlighting the necessity for in-situ measurements.


Experiment Locations

University campus green areas and industrial stations.


Experiment Contents

Under the leadership of Professor Longfei Yu from SICS, soil emissions monitoring was conducted on-site using soil respiration chambers, with mobile monitoring using hand carts and battery-powered vehicles.

a. Natural Soil: Campus lawns, campus lawns (wet), wetlands.

b. Fertilized Soil: Campus lawns + organic fertilizer + urea.


c. Natural Gas Purification Plant (Aerial Monitoring).


Experiment Objectives

Measure soil greenhouse gas emission fluxes and assess greenhouse gas source-sink contributions under different conditions.

Apply the measurements to methane leak detection in the oil and gas industry and characterize ground emission distribution intensity at station sites.


Experience Sharing

To minimize the impact on the soil respiration chamber method, recent flow rates should be optimized (the current flow rate was adjusted to 500 ml/min).

Considering the small or negative flux of CH4 in the soil, CH4 measurement results need further adjustment in terms of calibration and compensation algorithms.


Summary

Based on quantum cascade technology, the HT8800 Series All-in-one Portable GHG Analyzers  can simultaneously measure various greenhouse gases (N2O, CH4, and CO2) fluxes under in-situ soil conditions. The data results have guiding significance for optimizing farmland soil management and assessing greenhouse effects. Relevant information and data are currently being collected and organized.
